Question:

We are pregnant for the third time, so I was not planning on anyone throwing a shower. However, we are pregnant with twins and my sister really wants to throw us a shower. We don't really need clothing or toys, but we will really need diapers, formula, bottles, etc., Is it appropriate for my sister to throw a gift card shower? Thank you for your help!

Melanie

Answer:

Dear Melanie,

You bet it's appropriate! A gift card shower is a great idea and a perfect solution for time-challenged party goers. In fact, gift card showers work for lots of different parties such as Bachelorette parties, wedding showers that are centered on a home improvement theme, and bridal showers where gift selection can't take place until after the honeymoon. Today's shower etiquette is changing rapidly in order to incorporate our diversity!

In your case, you're already a mommy of two who's expecting twins! Invitees to your shower will already be in-the-know and will be eager to help you stockpile hardcore necessities.

Since your sister is taking command of the shower planning, she'll be the one to inform invitees about the shower's theme. In doing so, she can be creative by cleverly working the gift card idea into the invitation's design. For example, if the theme is "stockpile," the invitation cover might show piles of crisp white diapers bound together with cheerful red ribbons. The idea is to make your shower great fun by carrying out a simple theme from start to finish. It's ALL in the details!

Your Nitty Gritty ...

Gift cards are available at price-friendly stores such as Costco, Target, K-Mart and Babies R Us. All of those stores are big on stocking the mega-baby supplies you'll need from diapers to formula and more. Stores such as these give you much more bang for the buck. They've saved more money for moms and dads than I can shake a stick at!

They also offer gift cards to their outlets that can be conveniently purchased on line. The buyer has the option of having it mailed directly to you or to the buyer in case she wants to present the card to you in person at your shower.

It would be a good idea to let your sister know well in advance if you already have specific stores in mind. That way she'll have time to come up with a graceful insert card for the shower invitation. The insert card tastefully guides the guests to the right gift card selections. The separate card functions as a "whisper" to the guest rather than a shout. If this idea makes you uncomfortable, keep in mind that American Express gift cards, which are redeemable everywhere, can be purchased just about anywhere these days -- including local food stores and chain drugstores such as Rite-Aid.

We invite you to tell your sister about our website at theshowerdiva.com for party planning tips and also to have her visit our sponsor's website, www.badabadabingo.com, for a look at our upscale baby shower games and elegant shower favors.
