Question:

I am co-planning a bridal shower for my best gal pal. She would like for everyone to dress wearing hats and semi-dressy attire (kind of a Derby/Spring type to-do). How can I get that across in the invitations? She would also like to have her gift theme to be things she can use on her honeymoon to Mexico. How would I work that into the invites as well?

Fionna M. of Louisville, KY

Answer:

Dear Fionna,

Easy and breezy! Here's a great way to set up your spring/derby bridal shower invitations without having to spell out the dress code so obviously. Since you're located in Louisville, home of Churchill Downs, using classic images that relate to the Kentucky Derby will get your point across.

One idea that comes to mind is to create shower invitations designed in the shape of a lady's hat -- one you'd expect to see worn at the Kentucky Derby. This year's race is set for May 3rd, so it would be all the better if the shower is scheduled comfortably before then in case any of the women invited are also planning to attend the Derby. That way there'll be no scheduling conflicts.

Another obvious way to get the point across is if you throw the Bride-to-Be a tea or garden party. Such affairs are sophisticated and require fancy attire. A spring derby bridal shower is the perfect occasion for serving a signature cocktail -- the Mint Julep! Another elegant touch would be to give guests party favors in hat boxes.

Ask the Bride-to-Be to advise you of her registry choices -- those that offer products she needs to acquire for her Mexican honeymoon. Include this registry information in a small typeface on the invitation in the far left-hand or right-hand corner. That's the preferred way of getting the message across while remaining subtle.

Here are a couple of links that will get your imagination cooking. First, here are some Kentucky Derby style party invitations. The Mint Julep image is particularly appealing.

All Recipes.com provides several delicious Kentucky Derby style appetizers and dessert recipes. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you'll find recipes and an instruction video on how to mix Mint Juleps, alcohol-free Juleps and Mint Tea Punch.

You're well on your way to throwing a unique and elegant bridal shower -- the best shower ever!

Happy Showering,
